One of the country’s longest-running outdoor music festivals, Orton returns for its 55th year as Orton In Place, a virtual event celebrating the astonishing music, exquisite food and craft vendors, treasured partners, and quirky traditions that come together each year at the corner of Spaight and Ingersoll.

Saturday, August 29

Celebrate Orton wherever you are! Tune in to WORT’s broadcast of some of the very best Orton shows from the last few years, and relive the memories.

Here’s the schedule:

4 pm Acoplados

5 pm Booty Froot

6 pm Back to the Country Revue

7 pm Chuck Prophet & the Mission Express

8 pm JC Brooks & The Uptown Sound

9 pm Clyde Stubblefield All Stars

Madison favorite, Acoplados Latin Jazz Project, explores the nuances of Latin American and Caribbean folk and popular music by using voices, the cajon, and the guitar to reinvent melody, harmony and rhythm. Like the Orton crowds back in 2018, you will be transported to the "llanos" of Venezuela, the "solaressolares" of Cuba, and the "callejones" of Peru, leaving you in a place completely different and unexpected.

The punk-funk-ragga-hiphop beast, Booty Froot, kicked off Orton 2015. A collaboration of many key players from the Madison music scene of the early 80s through 90s (including the Tar Babies), Booty Froot put on a high-energy show that brought the crowds out on a drizzly Friday evening.

WORT's very own "Back to the Country" host Bill Malone and his talented wife Bobbie Malone serenaded Orton with a daytime program of classic country and folk songs with the Back to the Country Revue. Bill and Bobby recently packed up and moved back to Texas, leaving a legacy of wonderful music and radio programming in the community. Bill is the author of the critically-acclaimed definitive history of American country music "Country Music USA" and was recently interviewed in Ken Burns' documentary series on PBS, "Country Music." Bill and Bobby are joined in this 2014 set by a handful of notable Madison musicians including Richard Wiegel and Kristy Larson.

Next up, Chuck Prophet and The Mission Express. Prophet hit the road straight out of high school in the '80s with the psychedelic roots band Green on Red, and never looked back. He has worked as a singer/songwriter, guitarist, bandleader, and collaborator with artists as diverse as Cake, Kim Carnes, Solomon Burke, and Alejandro Escovedo, who declared on stage at his Orton Park headlining gig the previous year, “This looks like the kind of audience that would dig Chuck Prophet!” We took Alejandro's advice and booked Chuck Prophet for Orton 2018 and the show was phenomenal.

We loved this 2014 performance of JC Brooks and The Uptown Sound. Brooks trained as an actor, and even by soul man standards he's an outsized showman (with an equally outsized pompadour), shimmying, swiveling, sliding and jumping around the stage, his singing ranging from Otis Redding raspiness to Curtis Mayfield falsetto sweetness. Orton was mesmerized.

To close Orton In Place, we look back at a stellar 2018 performance of the Clyde Stubblefield All Stars (now known as Funkee JBeez), the Clyde Stubblefield tribute band based out of Madison, led by musical director and Grammy-nominated drummer Joey B. Banks, and featuring Kevin Willmott II on vocals. Enjoy Stubblefield hits, along with favorites from James Brown and The JB's, including songs from "The Original" and "Revenge of the Funky Drummer" albums.

Willy Street Co-op logo-NEW-COLOR-PRINT.

Willy Street Co-op

Willy Street Co-op is different than other grocery stores. A co-op, or cooperative, is a company that is owned by customers who invest in the business. We are guided by the Seven Cooperative Principles. Everyone can shop at the Co-op, but Owners receive extra benefits.
The Willy Street Co-op started in 1974, when a group of people wanted to provide quality food for their families. They began the Co-op in order to find and sell fresh, local, organic, and natural foods.

Over the years, the Co-op has grown to serve many Owners from many different locations. We have expanded to offer more products, we opened a production kitchen and we have three stores. Willy East and Willy North are in Madison, and Willy West is in Middleton.
As an Owner, when you purchase food and products you invest in a business you own. You support local farmers, product suppliers, and staff who live and work in your community.

Heartland Credit Union

Heartland Credit Union is a full-service, financial cooperative based in Madison, Wisconsin.
We proudly serve Southwestern Wisconsin. Our mission is to provide our members with quality, cost-effective, personalized financial services that contribute to their social and economic well-being.

Local isn’t just lip service.  It’s who we are.
Heartland’s Go Local mission is simple: create a top-of-mind awareness within our cooperative and in the communities we serve that promoting and supporting locally-owned businesses and non-profits will make our communities stronger and more self-reliant.

Can we get everything we need locally? No — but we can do better by supporting our locally-owned family farms, manufacturers and businesses. Make an effort to eat local — give local — go local.

Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Company

Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Company began in 1962, when Chuck Sr. and Nancy Deadman decided to open their very own candy and ice cream shop. Their vision was to provide the community with a bit of happiness by serving homemade candy and ice cream. They held the philosophy that quality lies at the heart of every marvelous treat shop, and with this, Chuck Sr., master researcher, tinkerer and perfectionist, set out on a mission of making the best ice cream he could. After countless batches of ice cream, and tweaking and adjusting machinery, he came up with his own original, super-premium ice cream flavors to offer at their shop, located on Monona Drive in Madison, Wisconsin.

After 60 years of continued innovation, Chocolate Shoppe Ice Cream Company encompasses four ice cream parlors and a manufacturing plant in Madison, Wisconsin. The manufacturing facility produces more than 100 super-premium, award-winning ice cream flavors, and supplies more than 400 small, independent restaurants and scoop shops nationwide.

Chuck Sr. and Nancy are both "retired," although Nancy is still in every week, and you'd be hard pressed to find a day when Chuck Sr. couldn't be spotted at the manufacturing facility or one of the area shoppes. Today, the company thrives under the leadership of the second generation of Deadmans, Chuck Jr. and Dave Deadman. Chuck Jr. and Dave proudly uphold the same commitment to quality and community that served as the foundation for that first little shop on Monona Drive.

Creating the right health approaches and care for the right person is called precision medicine. Getting the right information to make that happen is the goal of the All of Us Research Program from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).

To get there, we want to create the largest health database ever. By understanding people’s health, neighborhood, family, and lifestyle researchers will have information to better understand health and disease. This information is essential to create a healthier future for generations to come.

The University of Wisconsin-Madison is  a proud partner of the All of Us Research Program and is a member of the All of Us, Wisconsin consortium. The consortium represents a large and diverse patient population covering the entire state of Wisconsin. All of Us is run by the National Institutes of Health.

UW-Madison is calling on volunteers like you. We hope you will help make history and change the future of health. The health data you share will be added to the All of Us Research Program database. Researchers can access these data to conduct studies.
This could help them see how different factors, like environment, lifestyle, and genes can impact health. This may help develop medical treatments that are unique to each person.

To pasta lovers everywhere,

Our products are made with the finest all-natural ingredients, an appreciation for Old World culinary traditions, and most importantly, a love for food. From our traditional Egg Fettuccine to our Pumpkin Tortelloni, to our award-winning fresh Gluten-Free pasta, we hold quality and flavor to the highest regard in every batch.  We use artisan pasta making techniques that include making pasta in small batches on Italian machines, using a hand-rolled process, and extruding pasta though brass dies. These methods produce pasta with a true “al dente” texture.

Today our fresh pasta is sold to grocery stores and restaurants across the nation.

We stick by the motto “Farm to Fork with a Conscience”.  Our traditional noodles are made with carefully sourced eggs from Iowa and semolina from the best mill in North Dakota. The Ravioli and Tortelloni are filled with quality Wisconsin made cheese and Wisconsin grown vegetables. And our fresh, Certified Gluten-Free pasta begins with the very best California brown rice. These ingredients make the freshest, all natural pasta.

I hope you get the opportunity to try our pasta and……….fall in love.

Solidarity 2.jpg

We are a local, independent realty firm that provides outstanding service while adhering to its core values of social justice, environmental sustainability, and consumer protection. We firmly stand behind the people of Wisconsin and our quality of life and rejoice with you that the Walker regime has come to an end.

What makes Solidarity Realty an “Alternative?” The #1 complaint we hear from friends and colleagues who have had bad experiences with previous realtors is that they felt the realtor was not really working in their best interest. Rather, they felt the realtor was just in it to close another deal, and so they didn’t feel they could trust their realtor. At Solidarity Realty, we take our obligation to represent your best interests extremely seriously. In fact, we do not ever attempt to “be neutral” and represent both sides. We don’t think that is ethically possible. With us, you are assured that an honest, knowledgeable, patient and experienced advocate will be representing your best interests in your next real estate transaction.

We believe that your time with us will be meaningful and engaging – and that you’ll have a good time, too! This is a church where you can be yourself with other people who are on a similar journey.
